Horses of the Wine Country is a stunning visual tour of Sonoma County horses - a full color, 152 page coffee table book with 367 photos. Horses of the Wine Country captures the beauty of the County's many horses and the dedication of their owners, breeders, and riders.

Horses of the Wine Country was written to honor and celebrate the horses of Sonoma County and to raise the consciousness of the importance of the equine industry to the county's economy and its quality of life. Since horses are the second highest source of revenue for the County after grapes, the book was also written to obtain the recognition for horses that its wine currently enjoys.

Horses of the Wine Country begins with the history of Sonoma County horses describing the eras of Sonoma County as the center of the harness racing world in the late 1800s to being the center of the West Coast horse shows in the mid 1900s and contains a treasure trove of antique photographs. the synergy between horses, wine and vineyards. It is followed by a description of Sonoma County and why it is a perfect place for horse breeding and riding. This section includes equine economics summarizing the enormous economic impact horses have made on the County and the distribution of breeds, riders, and events. The Breeds and Breeders section include descriptions and photos of 22 breeds, stallions, and breeding ranches. The Champions section contains stories and photos of regional, national and international Sonoma County champion horses, riders, and generations. The Equine Contributor section describes the innovations and programs created for disabled riders, rescue horses, wellness and conditioning therapies, equine education, and contributors to events and breeds. Horses of the Wine Country also includes a tour and photos of the many equine events that annually take place in the county such as exhibitions, parades, tours, and competitions. The book concludes with a photo tour of some of the 35 equine associations in the county and photos of their events.

Horses of the Wine Country was compiled from information and photos provided by horse owners of Sonoma County. It was written by Wanda Smith of Guerneville, a former breeder of Quarter Horses, ranch manager, and current cutting horse competitor.
